The Retailery
A HOME FROM HOME

CLIENT
Greater London Authority
Shutdown by the police and plagued by drug use, the former Hush nightclub was a blight on Romford’s Historic Market, sitting vacant for 4 years.
Having grown up in Romford, we saw an opportunity. Working hand in hand with Havering Council, we secured £200,000 from the GLA High Streets Fund to transform the building into The Retailery – a playground for creative makers, thinkers and doers.
A food & beverage incubator, cultural venue and co-working hub, The Retailery offered free cultural activities seven nights a week, a not for profit bar, independent restaurants and an affordable workspace for local start-ups.
Collaborating with the community, we launched a fun packed programme showcasing local talent. From Rum & Reggae to Gin & Jazz; or Camp Karaoke to Rave Yoga, our events were run by the community, for the community.

Through a programme of tailored business support and subsidised facilities, we incubated businesses including Jas’ Punjabi Kitchen, Italian Kitchen and Tad’s Breakfast & Brunch Diner. We’re proud that many of the hosted start-ups went on to take their own premises in the Borough.
In just over two years, The Retailery became a home from home for local people, supporting 400 creatives, hosting 520 free events and creating 68 jobs. Its legacy? Bringing life and love to Romford Market and inspiring national high street brands to do the same. Awarded a ‘Special Recognition Award’ by the Great British High Street Awards, The Retailery gave people a safe space to shine.
