Take A Walk On The Wild Side

A Street Art Safari

CLIENT

The Brewery Shopping Centre

It has become everyday news that humanity faces an environmental crisis of epic proportions, and the one question on people’s lips is, ‘what can I personally do about it?’ The Brewery Shopping Centre rose to the challenge by improving its own green credentials, and together we teamed up to launch a street art project with the aim of sharing advice on how people can be kinder to the nature that surrounds them everyday.

Working with renowned Belgian muralist, DZIA, we commissioned a trail of ten stunning murals throughout the shopping centre in Romford. In DZIA’s distinctive illustrative style, each mural depicted an animal local to the Borough. From a great crested newt of international importance, to the protected peregrine falcon, each of the animals can be found in Havering and are celebrated in all their beauty on the walls of the centre.

‘Take a Walk on the Wild Side’ doesn’t stop there. The art trail was accompanied by an innovative app aimed at families, developed by London based tech company The Colour Project. The app utilised augmented reality to bring each mural to life, literally making the art jump out of the walls, creating a magical trail for children and adults alike.

The app was supported by web based content and a year long programme of events to help educate local people about exactly what they can do to protect their local nature. From workshops in ‘Bee Bomb Making’ to ‘How to Make a Hedgehog Hotel’, plus top tips on where you can spot each animal for ‘real’ in the Borough, ‘Take a Walk on the Wild Side’ called on the people of Havering to enjoy and protect the special natural assets that they still have.

I have been working with Things Made Public for 10 years now across multiple different installations, performance festivals and community projects. Working with them on Take a Walk on the Wild Side  was an exciting, collaborative experience which delivered a world class art installation from an international street artist with a side order of augmented reality. Always a pleasure to work with absolute legends.
