In just a few short years, Basildon has gone from one of the most underfunded and least culturally engaged boroughs in the country to a place bubbling with creative potential. The Creative BasildON programme, relocation of South Essex College, and plans for a new Centre for Screen and Digital Technologies have provided the foundation for culture and creative industries to be at the forefront of inclusive growth in the Borough for the future.
To achieve this, we were commissioned by Basildon Council to develop a practical and deliverable action plan to complement the Borough’s first ever Culture and Creative Enterprise Strategy. Building upon an ambitious Creative Tech Town vision for Basildon developed by Futurecity Ltd, we set about translating innovative ideas into achievable, tangible actions; providing a roadmap from early interventions through to long-term targets, ready to be actioned collaboratively by key town stakeholders.
Analysis of recent successes and challenges, alongside in-depth community engagement led to insightful real-life learnings that shaped the action plan, positioning Basildon as a place that says ‘yes’; proactively facilitating cultural and creative organisations already working in the town and incentivising new ones to come. Additionally the plan identifies the cultural infrastructure needed to grow and sustain cultural and creative industries activity in the long-term, as well as laying out the conditions needed to activate the town centre via meanwhile cultural use.
